Happy Lantern Festival

2022-02-15

In the thousands of years that have passed, we have been enthralled by the hustle and bustle of "the silver blossoms on the fire trees and the iron locks on the new bridges", hoping to fill the gap between "the moon at the top of the willow and the people at dusk".

This year, on New Year's Eve, the moon, lights and people will remain the same.

Since the time of the Sui and Tang dynasties, the lanterns have been hung high in every home and every person has been carrying them around, each one competing with the other.

From discussing the division of labour to making the lanterns, the students gradually took shape. In the making of traditional lanterns, carving, engraving and painting are indispensable, and the students also poured ink on the lanterns, painting the New Year with a tiger, painting the New Year with a lotus leaf, painting the New Year with a full moon and a sweet Lantern, and using ink and brush to send all kinds of visions.

In addition to this, poetry was added to add a festive touch. It is often said that of all the documents written by the United Nations in various languages, the one written in Chinese is always the thinnest. The Chinese characters, which have been handed down for 5,000 years, are a world away, and the ancient poems, which hold all sorts of thoughts about the Lantern Festival, are a world away.

How do you translate what's inside without losing the meaning in English? The secondary school students took on this intriguing 'challenge'. In addition to drawing, the students added poems to the faces of the lanterns, using a young perspective and fresh eyes to translate the ancient meaning that has been in the making for thousands of years.

The next day, the three schools will compete with each other with these lines of poetry and strokes of English. Let's wait and see!
